Most businesses don’t go looking for a short-term loan on a quiet Tuesday. A supplier wants payment before your customer pays you, a seasonal rush needs stock, or a machine packs up at the worst moment. When the need is urgent, it’s tempting to take the first offer that lands. That’s where people get caught out. Short-term business loan lenders vary a lot in cost, speed, and flexibility. This checklist covers seven things to check before you sign.
Two short-term lending companies can offer the same amount over the same term and leave you in very different places because of fees, repayment structure, security requirements, and how they behave if your month goes badly. The term is short, so repayments are large relative to the amount borrowed, and mistakes cost you faster than on a five-year loan.
An hour spent comparing lenders is far cheaper than a year regretting one.
Start with who you’re dealing with.
A reputable short-term loan company is easy to verify and won’t mind you checking.
Some lenders quote a monthly rate, some an annual one, and some use a factor rate, a fixed multiplier on the amount borrowed. They aren’t directly comparable, so ask for the total amount repayable and compare that. If you borrow £10,000 and repay £11,500, the loan costs £1,500, whatever the rate is called.
Also ask about arrangement fees, early repayment charges, late payment fees and any legal or valuation costs if the loan is secured. If a lender can’t give you a clear written breakdown, treat that as information.
Separate two things: how fast you get a decision, and how fast the money arrives. Lenders that use Open Banking to see your business bank data directly can often decide in minutes, while others still take days. Ask for a realistic timeline from application to funds, and what could slow it down. Don’t pick on speed alone. A fast lender with unclear costs is worse than a slightly slower one that’s transparent.
Short-term repayments hit hard, so look at how they’re structured. Weekly, fortnightly and monthly schedules suit different cash flows, and a business paid monthly by customers may struggle with weekly repayments. Ask whether repayments are fixed or linked to revenue, whether you can repay early and save money, and what happens in a tight month. Lenders who say “talk to us before you miss a payment” tend to be easier to deal with.
Some short-term loans are unsecured, but lenders often ask directors for a personal guarantee, meaning you could be personally liable if the business can’t repay. Others take security over assets. Neither is automatically a dealbreaker, but read the wording carefully, and for larger amounts, get advice from your accountant or a solicitor first.
Check a lender’s criteria before applying, so you avoid unnecessary credit searches. Lenders commonly look at trading history, filed accounts, turnover, credit history and sometimes whether directors are homeowners.
If your business has been trading for at least 12 months, Nucleus’s business loans could be worth a look. You’ll need at least one set of filed accounts at Companies House and an Open Banking connection, which is essential. A personal guarantee is required, and the applicant must be a UK homeowner. You can generally borrow up to 25% of annual turnover, and terms over 24 months require at least two years’ trading. Once an offer is approved, the terms can’t be changed, so settle the amount and term first.
Clear criteria like these save you time, whichever lender you choose. Contact us to learn more.
You only learn how good support is when you need it, so look for clues early. Can you speak to a real person before applying? Are questions answered clearly in writing? Do reviews mention how they handled problems, not just how smooth the application was? A lender that goes quiet when you ask about fees is telling you something.
Slow down if you see any of these:
The best short-term loan fits your cash flow and timeline at a cost you’ve worked out properly. Check who the lender is, compare the total repayable, and ask how fast the money really arrives, look at repayment and security terms, confirm you meet the criteria and notice how they treat you before you sign.
